Our program was built out of frustration.
For years, we watched talented players and well-intentioned families get sold a dream about “AAU basketball” that simply wasn’t true. We saw teams promise exposure, scholarships, and high-level competition - when in reality, many players were just paying to travel, stacking tournaments, and wearing the label without receiving real development.
The truth is this: just because you’re on an “AAU” team doesn’t mean you’re playing true AAU basketball. And it definitely doesn’t guarantee growth or college opportunities.
So we built something different.
We became the originators of the TRAIN & PLAY model in Pittsburgh - a system designed to prioritize development first. Our athletes train with purpose, learn the game the right way, and compete in environments that actually support their growth.
Our program is structured to serve players at all levels. Whether an athlete is just beginning their journey or pushing to compete at the highest level in high school, we meet them where they are and build them up.
For our upper-level high school players who express a desire to play in college, we provide honest evaluation, real guidance, and assistance in finding the right collegiate fit. Not hype. Not empty promises. Just clarity, direction, and relationships built on trust.
This is who we are.
We believe in development over deception.
We believe in substance over slogans.
We believe in doing it the right way.

Our program is built differently - and intentionally.
We emphasize real skill development, not hype.
Players will train 2–3 times per week, focusing on:
Teams will participate in 6–10 tournaments depending on the team’s needs. But let’s be clear:
We do not subscribe to the myth that players must travel all over the country to be “seen.” The vast majority of AAU players will not play college basketball - and those who do are typically recruited locally or regionally, not because they flew to five different states.
For players who truly aspire to play at the collegiate level, we have built relationships with college coaches at multiple levels and know how to guide that process properly.
We also believe families should not sacrifice every single weekend to youth basketball. Our tournaments are structured efficiently - typically over two days, at reasonable hours - so basketball enhances your life, not dominates it.

Gym Rat AAU is built around player development first. While tournaments are part of the experience, our focus is on building real basketball skills, confidence, and basketball IQ through consistent training and coaching. Our goal is to help players improve and grow in the game the right way.
All Gym Rat coaches have played college basketball, coached at the college level, or coached high school basketball. Our staff brings years of experience in teaching the game, developing players, and preparing athletes for the next level.
Teams typically practice 2–3 times per week. These practices focus on skill development, decision making, and competitive situations that translate directly to games.
Development in the gym is always our priority.
Our teams usually participate in a limited number of tournaments during the season (6-10). Unlike many AAU programs, we are not focused on chasing tournament championships every weekend.
Our philosophy is simple:
Players improve through training, not just playing games.
Our AAU programs typically range from $800 to $1600 per season, depending on:
This structure allows us to keep the focus on training and development rather than excessive travel.
Communication is very important in our program. Families receive a weekly newsletter that includes updates, schedules, and important information so everyone stays informed and organized.
We are committed to maintaining a positive, disciplined, and team-first environment for our players and coaches. We expect families to support the culture we are building.
Players thrive when the environment around them is focused on growth, effort, and respect for the game.
We are very clear about our approach: Gym Rat is a development-focused program. We expect families to fully support the training process and the culture of the program.
If a family is not aligned with that philosophy, this may not be the right program for them.
Our priority will always be protecting the positive environment for our players and coaches.
Our younger teams primarily compete in the Pittsburgh area, allowing players to develop their skills without excessive travel demands.
For our high school teams, travel may increase depending on the age group and the goals of the team. Most tournaments are typically within two hours of Pittsburgh, making it manageable for families while still providing strong competition.
Occasionally, our high school teams may attend recruitment-focused tournaments, particularly for players in their junior year, where college coaches are more likely to be evaluating prospects.
Our goal is to balance competitive opportunities with player development, rather than spending every weekend traveling long distances.

Development works.
Our most recent senior class included 9 players - 7 are now playing college basketball.
That is not accidental. It is the result of consistent training, accountability, and a process built on fundamentals and basketball IQ.
We understand what it takes to help players reach their highest level - whether that’s varsity basketball or the collegiate ranks.
We respect your time.
Your entire spring and summer should not revolve around youth basketball. We structure our schedule efficiently, limit unnecessary travel, and organize tournaments over two days at reasonable hours.
Basketball should build discipline and confidence - not consume every weekend.
We train players, not résumés.
Our athletes practice 2–3 times per week in an environment that demands effort, attention to detail, and growth. We focus on building confident decision-makers who understand the game - not just athletes chasing exposure.
If you trust our process, you will improve - and you will find the level of basketball that truly fits you.
